Paper 1 2 hours (+ 10min’s reading time) 3 Sections
Section 1 Unseen text analysis various written and/or visual texts (unseen).
Usually 3 or 4 one being, or including, a visual text. Texts will be in some way linked to the Area of Study focus area - conflict
A number of questions to be answered. Length and detail needed will be indicated by the marks value allocated to each question (usually a mixture worth between 1 and 6 marks each)
Section 2 Writing.
Will be linked to the Area of Study focus but will allow a more personal response ie will not require knowledge of specific texts or information. MAY require a format to be used. If you are writing to a format you may include material that is not factual but shows you are following the format eg if writing a newspaper article you may make up a name and a quote from an expert or other appropriate person to show you know this is normally done in this type of text
Section 3 Area of Study essay.
This will require a detailed knowledge of a central text and other texts which relate to the focus of the study (CONFLCIT). There should be variety in the other texts ie not all prose fiction. Standard & Advanced should refer to 2 related texts, 1 (one) of which you can have been taught in class.
Each section is WORTH 15 MARKS
Paper 2- 80 minutes (+ 5 min’s reading time) 2 Sections
Paper 2 will consist of 2 sections that will test the two text based modules studied.
Advanced
The 2 modules are:
§ Critical Study Module (POETRY)
§ Comparative Module . (Shakespeare/film – Othello/O, Gatsby & American Beauty or Talented Mr Ripley)
Critical Study
Requires a detailed knowledge of three poems ie issues and concerns (themes) and techniques employed and to have knowledge of interpretations which can be applied in detail to their understanding of the poems. Students MUST refer to THREE poems by their poet (Plath/Eliot/Browning/Hughes/Dawe) Note it is possible that the poems to be used in the answer will be designated in the question. Poem/s will NOT be printed on the paper.
Comparative Study
2 texts must be known in detail for: genre, issues, values & concerns (themes/messages of the composer), techniques used, how each text relates to the other and how the context in which each was composed helps to shape the text and your understanding.
Standard
The 2 modules are a Close Study Module and Images of Our World.
Focus is on the techniques that the composer uses to convey their message/ideas/issues.
Advanced & Standard
Paper 1 & 2 are of equal value ie each is worth 50% of the Examination Mark
In Section 2 of Paper 1 and in either section of Paper 2 you can be required to
write in a specified format. The other question in Paper 2 will require the literary
essay format to be used.
