Curriculum Overview

Mathematics is compulsory for students in Years 7 through to Year 10. It becomes optional when students reach Years 11 and 12. The following diagram illustrates the general pathways that students would follow through their school career, depending on the class that they are in.

Mathematics classes at MGHS are graded based on student ability.

In Year 7 and Year 8 most classes follow the Stage 4 syllabus. 7B and 8G are remedial mathematics classes which begin with the Stage 3 Mathematics syllabus before moving into Stage 4.

In Year 9 and Year 10, students break into 3 "Pathways" depending on mathematical ability. Each of these Pathways then lead into a corresponding Senior subject. Students who have not followed the recommended Pathway into a Senior subject will find it very difficult to successfully complete that course.

In Year 11 and Year 12 students who elect to do mathematics can choose from the Board Developed courses General Mathematics, Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 (Year 12 only), all of which contribute towards an ATAR. Students can also choose to study Applied Mathematics which is a Board Endorsed Course. This course won't contribute towards an ATAR but is a great course for students who struggle with Mathematics but want to get some basic maths skills suitable for TAFE courses and apprenticeships.
