About General Mathematics

The General Mathematics course is a non-calculus based course which counts as 2 Board Approved units for the HSC. Students who study this course will study topics within the broader areas of:
  • Financial Mathematics
  • Data Analysis
  • Measurement
  • Probability
  • Algebraic Modelling

This is the easier of the Stage 6 Mathematics courses. That being said it is a challenge to achieve a Band 6 in this subject in the HSC. Generally only about 4% of the students in the state who sit for this exam achieve a Band 6. In real terms this is less than 1500 students in the state. Students aiming for this goal need to make sure they attempt all the exam preparation they can and seek out any extra help they can from their class teachers.

Parents wanting more information on the Stage 6 General Mathematics Syllabus can find it on the Board of Studies Website.

Some Revision Options

The following files will a "Test Yourself" program for the General Maths topics. The files are compressed so save the file to your thumbdrive (or C: drive if at home) then Right Click and "Open With" - "Compressed file type". Once this window opens "Extract all files" and finally run the Test Yourself file. Be warned they are quite large files.

What should I do if I miss an Assessment Task or know I am going to?

Ideally in Years 11 & 12 you should be sitting for your Maths assessment tasks on the day they are set. They are listed on the school calendar so you should be able to plan in advance. If you are going to miss a task and know in advance you must follow the school procedure before the task. If you unexpectedly miss a task you must follow the school procedures as soon as you possibly can after the task.
The basic school procedure is to:

1. Let your class teacher or Head Teacher know you are going to miss the task (0249 342066) in person or by calling the school.

2. If you are sick you must have a Doctor's Certificate to support your claim. If you cannot get an appointment for the day you are sick, get an appointment card from your doctor with the appointment you can get and have it signed and dated for the day of the task.

3. Fill in the
school misdventure form as soon as possible (before hand if you know in advance) and hand in to your class teacher or the Head Teacher.
