About Mathematics, Mathematics Extension 1 and Mathematics Extension 2 These three courses are called calculus based mathematics courses. The Mathematics course is designed to give students who have studied the Stage 5.3 pathway in mathematics an understanding of and competence in some further aspects of mathematics which are applicable to the real world. The course is a sufficient basis for further studies in mathematics as a minor discipline at university. The Mathematics Extension 1 course builds on the content in the Mathematics course and is a recommended minimum basis for further studies in mathematics as a major discipline at university. This subject is also recommended for students intending to study physical and engineering sciences at university level. The Mathematics Extension 2 course builds on the Extension 1 course. It is only studied as a course in Year 12. It is designed for students with a special interest in mathematics who have shown that they have a special aptitude for the subject as it represents a distinctly high level in school mathematics.
