Business Studies

The Business Studies course provides a general business education and an opportunity to bridge the gap between school and work. Business Studies at MGHSMost students, after further education, will work in a business whether it is government business, their own business or someone else's business. The course focuses on the very workings of organisations, which supply us with goods and services that we buy. If you want to be "your own boss", then this course provides you with the practical knowledge in setting up and running your own business. Skills gained in Business Studies may help prepare you for understanding the role of business in our society.

Economics                     Economics at MGHS          

This course comprises a study of businesses, employers, consumers and governments in the Australian economy. Other economies around the world, both rich and poort are also considered, and their influence upon Australia. The issues involved allow students to develop their own attitudes to current events in the newspapers, television and other media. The Economics course gives a basic knowledge of the institutions, structures and processes in the Australian economy. The course promotes rational decision-making and makes students aware of what is happening in the world of Economics. (This course is not running in 2010).

 

Legal Studies

Legal Studies at MGHS

The Legal Studies course is an introduction to some aspects of the law for senior secondary students. The focus of the course is very practical and emphasis is placed on the law as it concerns younger Australians, especially in their rights and obligations. These are explored through such areas of law as: The law and Justice; Criminal Law; Consumers and the Law; Environment and the Law. Family and the Law; and Workplace and the Law.

Society and Culture

This subject is concerned with the interaction of people, society and culture. It will bring to the student a greater awareness of the rapid changes in Australian society, and in the student's own lives in their social situations. Society and Culture at MGHSThis course draws key concepts and methods from areas of study to understand human issues and life situations related to the student's immediate, wider and future world. The areas of study that are drawn upon include anthropology, sociology, political studies, future studies and social psychology. The areas from which issues may be drawn include: Coming of age in Today's World; Adolescence; Decision-making: Power, Authority, Participation; Popular Culture; Intercultural Communication; Social Inequity, prejudice and discrimination; Religion and Belief; Work and Leisure; and Looking Ahead to Tomorrow's World. There is a Personal Interest Project (PIP) on a topic chosen by the students in conjunction with the teacher, to complete HSC studies. This allows students to apply skills they have developed in a practical fashion.

Geography

The HSC course looks at the vital and interrelated issues of globalisation, transnational corporations, growth of mega cities and the impact of humans on ecosystems at risk. The preliminary course investigates issues of people in relation to the biosphere, lithosphere, atmosphere and hydrosphere. there is considerationof population and political geography and the use of natural resources. There is the opportunity to apply skills developed in class in a Senior Geography Project, which is a small scale investigation into an area of the student's interest. (This course is not running in 2010).
