Year 8

Our Year 8 team is a very talented group who won the first two debates in the zone. They successfully debated such topics as “ that we should allow ipods in the classroom” They were defeated in a very close debate against Warner’s Bay  where they were asked to defend the very difficult topic “ that character attacks on politicians are a legitimate political tool” .This is a delightful group of students and  I am confident that they will be a force to be reckoned with next year. The team consists of John Digby, Nathan O’ Hara, Madeleine Cooper and Emma Mc Donald

Year 9

The Year 9 team have had a successful year, winning the zone and  being narrowly defeated in the Regional Final. This team has been together for two years now and they continue to improve. They are an articulate and intelligent group of students who have been a pleasure to work with. I know that they will go on to bigger and better things next year. The team consists of  Madeleine Guider, Mackenzy Skinner, Liam Scully and Joshua Clemments.

Year 10

This team consisting of Corey Porter, Nicholas Orchard-Stephen, Tim Sphor and Alexandra Yates has also had a very successful year. They won zone and went on to regional level. A most intelligent and articulate group of students they have matured into a cohesive team. Each one has brought their special gift to the team. Corey has that “ nothing will phase me” attitude to debating and he takes the topics in his stride. Nicholas has a dry wit which makes for an entertaining speech and a coach holding her breath. Tim speaks with a conviction which leaves the audience in little doubt as to who has won the debate. And Alex whose amazing general knowledge and devotion to the team is evident in the fact that she rises early to watch world news which she has the remarkable ability to remember in detail. I am sure that this team will be successful debaters at senior level.

Year 12

This is the last time I will have the opportunity to report on this outstanding group of  debaters who have represented this school for five years now. They have travelled far afield and defeated many teams in their years together. They have each brought to the team their particular skills which I have written about in detail in the past, So for this report I would just like to say that it has been my privilege to be associated with this group. I am confident that the skills they have honed through their debating will prove invaluable to them as they leave Maitland Grossmann. I thank them for their time and devotion to the team and to their school and I am confident they will all do well. The team members are Tom Boak,  Keira Bogan, Shari Branscombe and  Jennifer Megarrity.

Law Week

This year we also entered a team in the Law Week Debating competition run by the Maitland Library. This is a Year 11 team who are generally Legal Studies students and are given a legal topic to argue. The rules are a little different for this competition as the students are given the topics prior to the day though they are not told which side they will argue. The team put in a great deal of preparation and research into the topic and won their debate on the day.  .I would like to thank for their efforts Joanna Miller, Emily Clark, James Montgomery and Nikola Blumer.

Thus ends another successful year of debating and public speaking. I would like to thank not only all of the students who put themselves forward for these competitions and who represent our school so well but also the many teachers who are prepared to give up their preparation periods to cover me so that I can transport these students and support them.
