The challenge encourages young people aged between 12 and 18 to get active in their community through a short-term project - and with several students at the school affected by diabetes and hearing impairments, the 'D-Day' theme was a winner with the student representative council (SRC). A healthy breakfast was held and 10 prefects used ear-muffs when in class to feel what it's like to have a hearing impairment. Students Nicole Hembry and Kristin Second organised a jellybean guessing competition to raise money for Diabetes Australia and will speak at the school's assembly to educate their peers about the challenge. Nicole's older sister, Rebecca, was told she had Type 1 diabetes when she was 10 years old. "I was nine when Rebecca was diagnosed and we had to change a few things with food in the house," she said. "Though before my sister was diagnosed, I knew nothing about it."
Maitland Grossmann High School prefect advisor Lee Osborne and SRC co-ordinator Jane Jardine have guided the students throughout their challenge. "This is the third year we've done the challenge and it's the last initiative the prefects do as a group," Mrs Osborne said. "And more importantly it raises awareness in our school of two important issues." Deafness Awarness at MGHS - Jane JardineGet the Flash Player to see this player.
